Explore North Los Altos

North Los Altos is the city's original neighborhood around downtown, with tree-lined streets, mid-century ranches and newer custom homes on quarter-acre lots near Main Street and Shoup Park.

About North Los Altos

North Los Altos is the oldest part of the city, generally bounded by Adobe Creek, El Camino Real, El Monte Avenue and Foothill Expressway, with the historic downtown at its center. Los Altos began here in 1907, when railroad executive Paul Shoup and the Altos Land Company sold the first town lots near today's Main Street. The area grew slowly among orchards until a postwar boom, and Los Altos incorporated in 1952. Today North Los Altos real estate is defined by mature trees, quiet residential streets and easy access to the Village.

Moving to North Los Altos

Moving to North Los Altos puts you within reach of downtown Los Altos, where Main Street and State Street are lined with cafes, restaurants and independent shops. Many streets have no sidewalks and a relaxed, semi-rural character, which is part of the city's long-standing small-town feel. The neighborhood is centrally placed for commutes to Palo Alto, Mountain View and Sunnyvale. Buyers should note that remodel and new-construction projects follow City of Los Altos design review, so plan ahead if you intend to build.

Cost of Living & Housing in North Los Altos

North Los Altos homes for sale sit in the upper tier of the Los Altos market, with a premium for walkability to downtown and generous lot sizes. Lots are often around a quarter acre, while some older parcels closer to the original town site are smaller. The housing stock mixes 1950s ranch homes, early twentieth-century houses and a growing number of newer Craftsman, farmhouse and Mediterranean-style builds, many with basements. Townhomes and condominiums near downtown offer a lower-maintenance option within the same convenient location.
