About Lindenwood, Atherton
Lindenwood is a historic Atherton neighborhood bounded generally by Marsh Road, Bay Road, Ringwood Avenue and Middlefield Road on the east side of town. It occupies land that was once Linden Towers, the grand 19th-century country estate of Comstock Lode silver magnate James C. Flood. Wrought-iron arches bearing the initials "JCF" still mark the entrance gates on Middlefield Road, and fountains, statues and lamp posts from the estate era remain throughout the neighborhood.
Moving to Lindenwood
Lindenwood's winding, interconnected streets were laid out in a way that discourages through traffic, which gives the neighborhood a tucked-away, peaceful atmosphere. Mature trees form leafy canopies over many of the lanes, and the historic gates create a strong sense of arrival. The neighborhood includes roughly 500 addresses, so it has a defined identity while still feeling spacious. Buyers often appreciate that Lindenwood sits close to downtown Menlo Park while retaining a secluded, garden-like setting.
Cost of Living & Housing in Lindenwood
Lindenwood real estate features a blend of older homes from the decades after the Flood estate was subdivided and newer custom residences built on the same generous parcels. Most lots are around one acre, providing room for expansive yards, pools and outbuildings. Architectural variety is a hallmark here, with traditional homes standing alongside a small collection of distinctive 1953 Eichler designs that Joseph Eichler himself built as part of a high-end tract. Within Atherton, Lindenwood generally sits in a high price tier, with values driven by lot size, condition and rebuild potential.
Getting Around Lindenwood
Marsh Road, along the northern edge of Lindenwood, provides direct access to Highway 101 for commutes toward San Francisco, the East Bay via the Dumbarton Bridge, and the South Bay. Middlefield Road runs along the western side and connects to Redwood City to the north and Menlo Park and Palo Alto to the south. The Menlo Park Caltrain station is a short drive away for rail service up and down the Peninsula. Bay Road and Ringwood Avenue offer convenient local routes toward Menlo Park neighborhoods and Silicon Valley tech campuses.
