About Atherton Oaks
Atherton Oaks is a residential neighborhood on the east side of Atherton, generally bounded by the Caltrain tracks, Middlefield Road, Oak Grove Avenue and the Redwood City line. Fair Oaks Lane, Watkins Avenue and Encinal Avenue run through it, along with quiet cul-de-sacs shaded by mature oaks. The area grew up around the old Fair Oaks rail stop, and Fair Oaks was the town's original name before Atherton incorporated in 1923. Today it is home to the town's civic center and its largest public park.
Moving to Atherton Oaks
Moving to Atherton Oaks means settling into a neighborhood of wide, tree-lined streets where most roads have no sidewalks and homes sit well back behind hedges and gates. Atherton has no commercial zoning, so daily errands happen in nearby downtown Menlo Park or Redwood City, each just a few minutes away. The town's civic center and library on Fair Oaks Lane give the neighborhood a true center of town life. Buyers relocating to Atherton Oaks often value being on the flat, close-in side of town.
Cost of Living & Housing in Atherton Oaks
Atherton Oaks homes for sale sit in the upper tier of the Peninsula real estate market, with value shaped mostly by lot size and location within the neighborhood. The housing mix includes single-story ranch homes from the mid-twentieth century, grand older manor houses and a growing number of newly built estates. Atherton's one-acre minimum applies to newly created lots, but many legacy parcels here are smaller, which creates distinct segments within the area. Interior cul-de-sac locations are generally favored over lots near Middlefield Road or the rail line.
Getting Around Atherton Oaks
Getting around Atherton Oaks is straightforward thanks to its location between El Camino Real and Middlefield Road, two of the Peninsula's main north-south routes. Marsh Road and Woodside Road provide quick connections to Highway 101 and the Dumbarton Bridge toward the East Bay. Atherton's own Caltrain stop closed in 2020, so commuters typically use the Menlo Park or Redwood City stations, both a short drive or bike ride away. Stanford University and the Sand Hill Road corridor are roughly ten to fifteen minutes away.
Local Amenities & Things to Do in Atherton Oaks
Holbrook-Palmer Park, a 22-acre former country estate, is the neighborhood's centerpiece, with lawns, gardens, tennis courts, a playground and historic buildings that host events. The Atherton Library and the town's civic center sit along Fair Oaks Lane, adding a walkable civic core. Shops, restaurants and markets along Santa Cruz Avenue in downtown Menlo Park and on Broadway in Redwood City are only minutes away. Stanford Shopping Center, Stanford's campus trails and private clubs in the area round out the local lifestyle.
Schools & Education in Atherton Oaks
Atherton Oaks is primarily served by the Menlo Park City School District for kindergarten through eighth grade and the Sequoia Union High School District for high school. Homes are commonly assigned to Encinal Elementary School, located within the neighborhood, Hillview Middle School and Menlo-Atherton High School. Several well-known private schools are also located in and around Atherton. Assignments can vary by street and over time, so confirm school boundaries for any specific address with each district.
Why Buyers Choose Atherton Oaks
Buyers choose Atherton Oaks for generous lots, mature oaks and a close-in location on the flatter, more central side of Atherton. Holbrook-Palmer Park, the town library and Encinal School are all part of the neighborhood, which is rare in a town with so few public places. Quick access to El Camino Real, Highway 101 and both Menlo Park and Redwood City makes daily life and commuting easy.
